Jasmine Hand Warmer

April 26, 2020 by Liz-DVD

It’s like a sleeping bag for your hands!

Haha! I was trying to think of a tag line for this project and apparently that’s what I came up with! But for real though, the Jasmine Hand Warmer is squishy and lux. I designed it to be an alternative to gloves and mittens. It’s perfect if you or a loved one have a hard time with dexterity. Or maybe you want something a little different to jazz up your wardrobe. Beware, though you may end up seeking out rides in horse drawn carriages so you can snuggle down under a blanket and show this baby off.

What you’ll need

  • 6.5 mm crochet hook
  • 10mm crochet hook
  • 2 skeins of Red Heart Heat Wave Yarn
    • Or approximately 300 yd of a similar worsted weight yarn
  • 1 skein of Lionbrand Go For Faux Yarn
    • Or substitute another faux fur yarn
    • If subsisting a different yarn, switch out the 10mm crochet hook for an appropriate crochet hook for your yarn.
  • Yarn Needle

What you need to know how to do

  • This pattern is suitable for beginner to intermediate crochet skill level
  • Patterns are written in US standard terms
    • Jasmine stitch
    • Single crochet (SC)
    • Chain (Ch)
    • Double Crochet (DC)

Jasmine Hand Warmer

The Jasmine Hand Warmer is crocheted in the round. The outer sleeve is made with Red Heart Heat Wave (or a similar worsted weight yarn). As the name would imply, this yarn actually generates heat, making you feel up to 12 degrees warmer! It’s the perfect compliment to the faux fur inner sleeve! I seriously tried to cram as much cuddly warmth into this piece as humanly possible. The inner sleeve is crocheted the outer sleeve to create a cute little peak of faux fur on the edges. You’ve got almost endless options for colors pairings! Go bold with contrasting outer and in inner sleeve or keep it monochromatic. There’s something for every personality!

As you crochet the outer sleeve, it’s going to feel a little oversized. Once you add the inner sleeve the faux fur is going to fluff everything out and make it super cozy. When the inner sleeve is slightly smaller is also creates a slightly puffy shape when you crochet it all together.

If it’s still not the right size, this pattern is easy to adjust. Add or subtract stitches to get the size you want. Cut the number of foundation puffs down from 28 to 20 if you want to make a size to fit smaller hands. Just make sure your inner sleeve is the same size, or a littler smaller, than the outer sleeve. Want your piece to shorter? Just stop your jasmine stitch as soon as you’ve got the length you want.

So basically, if the words cozy, puffy, warm, fuzzy, squishy, and snuggly have a positive connotation in your world, this project could be your happy place.

Jasmine Stitch Tutorial

This hand warmer is a simple tube made of Jasmine crochet stitch in the round. I love the jasmine stitch. Once you get the hang of the puff stitch, you’re golden! I personally think jasmine stitch is easiest to learn in video format. Check out my video tutorial below or on my YouTube channel. If you prefer written instructions, scroll down.

Jasmine Stitch – Foundation Puffs

The jasmine stitch does not start out with typical chain stitch. We’re going to make a chain of puff stitches instead.

  1. Make a slip stitch. Chain 1.
  2. Yarn over your hook and insert into the chain. Yarn over, pull your hook through and then pull up on the yarn to create a loop. Yarn over and pull up another loop in the same chain. 5 loops on your hook.
  3. Yarn over. Hold the back side of the yarn over between 2 fingers while you pull the yarn over through all 5 loops on your hook. {Seriously, the video helps so much here!}
  4. Insert the hook into the loop you’ve been holding. Yarn over, pull through the first loop. Yarn over and pull through the 2 loops on your hook. You’re basically making a single crochet here at the tip of your puff.
  5. As you create your next puff you will be inserting your hook into the single crochet you just made. Repeat steps 2-4 to create the number of puffs your pattern calls for.
  6. To work in the round, slip stitch to the chain stitch at the beginning of your first puff, being careful not to twist the chain.
  7. Create one more puff. If you are working flat, this will serve as your turning puff. If you are working in the round this will be your first puff in the first round.

Jasmine Stitch Row or Round

Now that we have a foundation row, we’ll start creating the petals of your florets. The petals are worked 3 at a time.

  1. Working from the turning puff you just made, yarn over, insert your hook and pull up a look in the SC at the top of the puff, twice. With the 5 loops still on your hook, yarn over, insert your hook and pull up a loop in the BOTTOM of the turning puff, twice. With 9 loops still on your hook, yarn over, insert your hook and pull up a loop in the SC at the joint between the next 2 puffs. 13 stitches on your hook.
  2. Yarn over and hold the back of the yarn over between 2 fingers as you pull your hook through ALL 13 STITCHES. Yarn over, insert into the held yarn. Yarn over and pull through one loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  3. Start working the next 3 petal cluster in the SC you just created as you finished off the last cluster. Continue working steps 1-2.
  4. If you are working flat, work the 3 petal clusters to the end of the row. Make a turning puff, turn your work and continue with rows till your piece is the correct length.
  5. If you are working in the round, work 3 petal clusters till there is only one puff left before the first puff of the round. Instead of working a 3 petal cluster, work 2 petals (you’ll only have 9 loops on the hook before you pull your final yarn over through.). Slip stitch to the first puff in the round to join. Make a turning puff in the SC of the first puff of the previous round and continue working the next round.

Jasmine Stitch Tips and Tricks

  • As you pull your hook through all 13 stitches, make sure to turn your hook down so it slides easily through all the stitches.
  • It helps to hold all the 13 stitches as straight as possible as you pull your hook through. This is especially important as you work in the round because it tends to want to curve.
  • As you pull your yarn all stitches if you held your yarn over a little to far out your puff/cluster might feel a little too loose. You can always snug it up a bit by pulling the yarn tight as you make the SC.

Jasmine Stitch Hand Warmer Pattern

Make outer sleeve

With 6.5 mm hook and medium weight yarn, make a slip knot

Setup Round: Create 28 puff chains. Sl st to join to first puff. Be careful not to twist work when joining.

Round 1: Create 1 puff in same stitch as the join. Work one round of Jasmine St until 1 puff remains. Work only 2 petals into the next space. Slip stitch to join to the first petal of the round.

Repeat round 1 until piece measures 10 inches, or desired length. Cut yarn and secure end.

Make inner sleeve

With faux fur yarn and appropriate needle, Ch enough stitches to equal circumference of outer sleeve (or just slightly smaller). I created 28 Ch stitches with LB Go For Faux and a 10mm hook. Sl st to join.

Body: Work DC in joined rounds until piece measures just shorter than outer sleeve (approx 9.5 – 9.75 inches if following this pattern sizing). Do not cut yarn. Leave the last stitch active.

Assembly

Now we’re going to join the inner and outer sleeve. The inner sleeve should be the same size or slightly smaller than the outer sleeve. This gives the hand warmer a little extra poof. We’re going to single crochet around both ends to attach the sleeves together. This also adds a decorative, faux fur edging to the hand warmer.

Pull the inner (faux fur) sleeve into the outer (jasmine st) sleeve.

If you removed your hook from the live stitch on the inner sleeve, reinsert it here. Insert your hook into the next SC stitch in between jasmine puffs. It’s not critical which stitch you start with since we’ll be working all the way around.

Insert your hook through the corresponding stitch on the inner sleeve. SC. Continue to SC evenly around, making sure to catch a stitch from the inner and outer sleeve each time.

Sl st to join once you work all the way around. Cut yarn and secure end. Use a yarn needle to pull all yarn ends in between the two layers.

Finished!!

Your Jasmine Hand Warmer is ready!! I love this piece as an alternative to gloves and mittens. Share your finished pieces with me!
